Hearing Aid Care and Maintenance - Alpha Clinics

Hearing aids are tiny, high-tech devices that are worn on and in the ear a place where wax, debris and humidity congregate.

Maintaining your hearing aids is the key to keeping them working well for entirety of their lifetime. Proper care and maintenance requires you to keep up with a regular nightly routine

Following these simple care and maintenance tips will help ensure they’re always performing their best.

  1. Wash your hands before handling.
  2. Always handle your hearing aids with care and, when changing batteries or cleaning them, do so in a clean, well-lit environment.
  3. Store your hearing aids in a safe, dry place away from children and pets.
  4. Turn off your hearing aids when you are not using them.
  5. Periodically clean the battery contacts and remove any visible earwax or debris with a soft, clean cloth.
  6. Change filters or wax guards regularly to remove wax and dirt that may degrade sound quality.
  7. Keep your hearing aids clean and dry. Hearing aids constantly exposed to potentially damaging particles including lotions, hair sprays, rain, snow, earwax, dirt and dust. The more care you take to protect your devices from the elements, the lower the risk of a malfunction.
  8. Schedule routine checkups with your hearing professional for thorough, expert cleanings.
  9. Never skip daily cleanings. Always use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down your hearing aids. We recommend using a cleaning tool or cleaning kit to get to all hard-to-reach areas. Dehumidifiers are another great option for ensuring your devices are moisture-free and ready for each day.

It’s not uncommon for hearing aids to require some degree of professional service, which is why hearing aids are typically sold with warranties and repair coverage. Cleaning your hearing aids regularly can drastically reduce the number of repairs required during the life of your hearing aids and help keep sound quality high.
